"A Rare and Beautiful Bird"

1972 Hofner 463 Electric Jazz AZ (Attila Zoller)

This near mint 16 1/4-inch-wide and 3 1/4 inch deep guitar weighs just 5.90 lbs. One-piece 'Ribbon' Sapeli mahogany back and sides with a one-piece natural carved spruce top. The top and the back are bound with white and black purfling enclosing a very ornate 1/4 inch decorative 'rope' pattern inlay. One-piece flamed maple neck with a nut width of just under 1 11/16 inches and a very comfortable medium-to-thick profile. Single-bound 'slab' rosewood fretboard with 20 original medium-thin frets and inlaid pearl dot position markers with black 'dot' side-markers. Specific-shaped, single-bound, walnut-faced headstock with inlaid mother-of-pearl "Hofner" and inlaid mother-of-pearl Floral Vine. 'Bell' shaped, three-layer, black over white plastic truss-rod cover with three screws. Small rectangular silver label with serial number "211483" printed in black on the back of the headstock. Individual 'Kolb' closed-back tuners with two straight edge ovalic metal buttons. Single Attila Zoller 'Shadow' floating pickup with an output of 16.45k. Specific-shaped, four-ply black over white plastic pickguard with "Hofner" etched in white (lettering worn). Two controls, one volume and one tone with clear plastic, barrel-shaped control knobs with black underside and numbers in white. Ebony bridge with white strip decoration and individual movable saddles on height adjustable ebony base. Hofner Harp style tailpiece with "Made in Germany" stamped on the lower edge. There is some very light finish checking on the body and two small indentations (the size of a match-head), just below the bass-side sound-hole. Otherwise this very beautiful guitar is in near mint (9.25) condition. Housed in the original? three-latch, shaped black hardshell case with green plush lining (9.25).

In our research we have been unable to find another example with all of the present refinements. It is very obvious that this model was produced in 'very small' numbers…
